When Tom Feldman retired from a long career in pharmaceutical sales, he wasn’t sure what came next. That changed after he attended a POE donor appreciation event.

“I walked in curious and left inspired,” he says. “Mentoring first-generation, low-income college students stuck with me—and I had no idea how much I’d gain from it.”

Over the past decade, Tom has mentored several students, helping them navigate challenges, build confidence, and prepare for life after college. One mentee shifted from kinesiology to applied mathematics after their conversations—now thriving in computer programming. “Moments like that remind me why this work matters.”

Tom believes POE stands out because it pairs scholarships with one-on-one mentorship. “Many programs give money and step back. POE stays with students—helping with resumes, internships, networking, and life skills. It’s about preparing them for life, not just helping them graduate.”

He also sees how crucial scholarships are for students whose families struggle financially. “They fill the gap between what schools provide and what students actually need to make college possible.”

Why get involved? Tom’s answer is simple: “These students need guidance and someone who believes in them. As a mentor or donor, you help them make better decisions and build a strong future. Together, we’re making a real difference.”

For Tom, the experience has been transformative. “It’s been incredible,” he says. “I can’t imagine anything more fulfilling.”
